The Sandvik stainless steel developed for Opinel is renowned for its sharpness and ease of maintenance. Stainless steel that can undergo heat treatment, which gives it its good hardness, is called martensitic. It has a carbon content of at least 0.40%, which allows for a very satisfactory edge without being susceptible to corrosion.
Hornbeam handle, color-stained
Origin: France. A medium-sized tree with dense foliage (toothed leaves) and a fluted trunk with thin, smooth greyish bark. Very hard and very resistant wood, light greyish. Used for making tools, billiard cues, and formerly butcher's stalls and yokes.
7 cm Yatagan blade
The name Yatagan originally referred to a saber used in Turkey. When creating his folding knife, Joseph Opinel designed a blade with a so-called Yatagan shape (curved at the tip) and a domed profile, which guarantee incomparable cutting quality.
