The Sandvik stainless steel developed for Opinel is renowned for its sharpness and ease of maintenance. Stainless steel that can undergo heat treatment to achieve good hardness is called martensitic. It has a carbon content of at least 0.40%, which allows for a very satisfactory edge without being susceptible to corrosion.

Hornbeam handle with colored stain

Sourced from: France. A medium-sized tree with dense foliage (toothed leaves) and a fluted trunk with thin, smooth, grayish bark. Very hard and very resistant wood, light gray. Used for making tools, billiard cues, and formerly butcher's stalls and yokes.

The name Yatagan originally referred to a saber used in Turkey. When creating his folding knife, Joseph Opinel designed a blade with a Yatagan shape (curved at the tip) and a convex profile that guarantee incomparable cutting quality.
